Hyllie is a non-homogeneous place with obvious ‘holes’ in the urban fabric; some are in the process of changing, others more difficult to change. A strategic design proposal has to imagine more than one solution being made over time in order to address the challenges of (mental) barriers, lack of community and building a strong local identity.

An important starting question in this regard is “Which physical and spatial additions are actually needed, and are they realistic to finance or implement in the built urban structure?”

To apply future solutions in Hyllie, the planning must happen at multiple levels, both regarding decision making as well as interventions from new infrastructure to urban furniture, combined with an improved visual identity of Hyllie - using colours, icons and names to mobilise this.

It is also across these levels where ‘Re-Sourcing’ best can be planned in regard to recycling of materials and participatory processes which will have an impact in the design solutions and the socially inclusive outdoor spaces and routes across the scales and sites.

Hyllie is placed in the middle of a bend recreational axis going from Malmö towards Öresund (approx. 5 km to each part from Hyllie) with two additional networks going south or east. These routes are important assets in a landscape full of barriers, mostly motorways and round-abouts, which are almost impossible to change or close.

This proposal seeks to strengthen these four networks, connecting them via central Hyllie which in the future both can be a destination in itself but also a stop during the different routes, whether it be from Malmö city or the local neighbouring school, making the distances feel shorter.
